Minoxidil is an over-the-counter hair loss treatment product that is currently available, and is one of the only two hair loss treatment products for women that are scientifically proven to work. At present, it is duly registered and approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and is commonly marketed with the brand name "Rogaine." Minoxidil has been proven to be a very effective hair loss treatment. It is usually used to reverse the effects of androgenetic alopecia (hereditary hair loss or male pattern baldness). It is also quite useful in treating mild cases of alopecia areata (baldness in spots).
Background
Minoxidil was originally designed to be an oral drug to treat high blood pressure. However, it was noted that it had the interesting side effect of growing hair and reversing baldness. During the 1980’s, UpJohn Corporation produced Rogaine, which was a topical solution that contained 2% minoxidil for the specific purpose of treating baldness and hair loss.
How it works
It is not really known to the public how minoxidil actually works in relation to hair growth, although it is scientifically proven to grow back hair. However, it is known to be a vasodilator. Vasodilators are substances that cause blood vessels in the body to become wider, producing more blood pressure. Minoxidil, when applied to the scalp, is believed to cause the blood vessels in the scalp to dilate, bringing needed nutrients to the hair follicles. A second theory argues that minoxidil enlarges withered follicles that have previously been damaged by androgens, thus extending the growth cycle. A third argument suggests that it promotes cell division around the hair follicle thus encouraging growth.
Effects
During the first few weeks of application, users may notice that their hair will begin to shed. However, they need not fear because this is a part of the growing process; it is a sign that the minoxidil applications are starting to work. In time, users will find themselves with hair growing at the normal rate.
Minoxidil, like most hair loss treatment products today, needs time to work. Minoxidil will stimulate the user’s hair follicles and invigorate it to start producing hair, but not immediately. The hair follicles may have to go through several hair growing cycles before the user will get optimal results. Also, using more quantity than the suggested dosage will not let your hair grow any faster than it will when using the proper dosage.
Also, if users stop using minoxidil for a long period of time, hair loss may begin again, so it is advisable to keep on using it to retain the healthy growth of hair.
Side Effects
About 6% of minoxidil users have reported side effects. The most common side effect is scalp irritation. If it happens, it is advisable to use a mild dandruff shampoo twice a week to help keep your scalp healthy.
Other rare side effects include lightheadedness, acne on the area applied, flushing of the skin, blurred vision, numbness or tingling in the hands, feet and face, and decrease in sexual desire.
Recommendations
Minoxidil is a great way to treat hair loss. However, it is recommended that you do not use it if you are experiencing allergic reactions to the product. It is also not advisable to use if you are pregnant, nursing, or under eighteen years of age.
