Vanity is said to be one of mankind’s innate sins. And our hair can be considered as one of the factors that largely contribute to our overall physical appearance, and therefore it is very much a part of everyone’s vanity issues. The hair-related fact is: involuntary baldness connotes aging. Not all people are comfortable with signs of aging. Hence, not all people are comfortable with hair loss, especially those who do not want to be perceived as someone older than his age. In any way you put it, mankind’s narcissism or vanity will generally NOT be in favor with hair loss. So it is but important to take care of our hair like we take care of our other vital organs.

  • People normally lose an average of 50 to 100 hair strands per day. If you hair fall exceeds those numbers, then it’s time to get a treatment.
  • Every hair root has its own follicle where it grows. And in the same follicle is also where fallen or lost hair grows back.
  • Medical term for hair loss is alopecia.
  • Illnesses such as diabetes, lupus, kidney and liver diseases can cause hair loss.
  • Poor nutrition or improper eating habits can lead to hair loss especially if protein deficiency is prolonged. Even vegetarians are at risk of hair loss because they lack the proteins that can be taken from meat.
  • Male-pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia) is caused by androgens (male hormones), testosterone steroids, and genetics
  • Medications like acne medicines, lithium, chemotherapy drugs, (etc.) can cause hair loss.
  • Too much Hair treatments and styling can cause damage to hair (follicles) and may cause baldness in the long run.

How to Prevent Hair Loss

Unfortunately, many people will have to experience quick hair loss (even at their teen years) and may not be able to grow their locks as fast as desired. Sure, there are a lot of artificial solutions available nowadays that can conceal fast hair loss such as, wigs, hair extensions (?), caps, burrets, and many other head pieces. However, when it comes to hair care, prevention is still always better than cure. Here are some tips to pamper your crowning glory and prevent it from falling in a bunch of thousands:

  • Use your fingertips to massage your scalp. This move will also increase the circulation of natural oils in your scalp.
  • Gently comb or brush your hair with at least 100 strokes before you sleep in order to discontinue the oil clogging in your scalp pores.
  • As much as possible, steer clear from free radicals like the sun (UV rays) and wind in order to avoid damage.
  • Use hot showers, hair dryers, curling irons, and other heated styling gadgets in moderation.
  • Avoid tight fitting caps and hats that can cause poor circulation in your scalp.
  • Limit coloring your hair to once every 2 months as color chemicals can damage your hair.
  • Choose healthy edibles. Proper nutrition is still the key, make sure to incorporate protein and iron-enriched food in your diet.
  • Healthy scalp, hair, and skin can be promoted by taking in supplements (protein, biotin vitamins A, B6, B12, C, iron, copper, omega 3 fatty acids, calcium, zinc, folic acid, and magnesium.
  • Take in at least 8 glasses of water in a day.
  • Avoid stress as this can contribute to hair loss.
  • Use shampoo and conditioner that suits your type of hair. There are shampoo brands that claim to prevent hair fall and protect your hair from UV rays, might as well try them.
  • Get enough sleep. Sleep is a form of relaxation that can alleviate stress, and therefore it can also contribute in keep away hair loss.
  • If you are currently experiencing rapid hair loss, it is best to consult a dermatologist to prevent it from getting worse.

Losing our crowning glory is definitely a big dilemma. Although it is a sad phenomenon, it is important to know that hair loss can be prevented. In our world today where several technologies that can solve hair loss have spawned from everywhere, then the last thing to do is to panic about it. There are ways to prevent it; likewise, there are ways to cure it. Just be an “informed” individual and you will be alright.
