The ever-elusive “fountain of youth” remains obscure, yet its lure has never been abated by the skepticism it has received throughout the years.   The possibility of staying young forever has a mystical “pull” among all of us.  Perhaps, it is not only the uncertainty of what awaits us when death beckons that fires us to discover the antidote to growing old, but also the reluctance of completely surrendering to the notion of growing gray hairs, having crow’s feet and wrinkles, being bent and wasted, and the overwhelming thought of uselessness. These negative connotation of an advancing age strongly motivates us to continue the search.

Finally, we found it.  Not in a fountain, but in a bottle, a blister pack, a capsule, or tablet or as an instant drink, cereal, or something chewable.

Vitamins and Minerals, as well as other supplements, come in a myriad of myths and facts.  Which ones are not real are discussed here, in the hope that next time we pump 12 different colors and sizes of vitamins into our mouths, these ones are helpful to us.  As the craze of looking young and beautiful reels on, the concept of commercialism is energized.  Patronizers of youth and beauty, who listen to vanity rather than reason, are almost always the ones victimized.

False:  Synthetic Vitamins and Natural Vitamins are equally absorbed by the human body.

Synthetic vitamins are a lot cheaper compared to natural vitamins but they are less absorbed in the human body.  
When in a vitamin regimen, and you want to save, go natural.  It pays in the long run to invest on natural vitamins which may cost higher than synthetic ones, but nourish the body, with optimum results.

False:  Fruits and vegetables remain as the rich sources of vitamins and minerals.

Not anymore.  Supplements rich in vitamins and minerals are highly recommended to complement the diet.  

From the farm to the kitchen table, vitamins and minerals could be lost in transit.  Latest agricultural methods and procedures expose fruits and vegetables to factors that may either deplete or totally alter the level content of vitamins and minerals, in them.

Long exposure to heat when cooking vegetables has been found out to deplete its vitamin and mineral content.

False.  All nutritional supplements are safe.

Be wary with nutritional supplements – some contain ingredients harmful to the body when taken in large doses.  When in doubt, it is always best to consult a physician.  

Vitamins and minerals have known curative effects, in fact, some clinical studies indicate combative effects of vitamins and minerals against cancer, when taken in appropriate doses.

It is however, advisable, to take precautionary measures when a new vitamin or mineral is introduced in the market.  Read product information and confer with a medical practitioner about matters which you cannot fully comprehend about your vitamin or mineral.

Discern.  Do not allow somebody’s favorable experience with a certain mineral, vitamin or nutritional supplement cloud your mind into believing that what works for him, can work for you, too.

Total wellness, afterall,  is your complete adherence to a healthy lifestyle, not just on the taking of vitamins, minerals or nutritional supplements.
