Protein Power Diet

Dieting

Originally published in 1996, the Protein Power Diet was written by the Eades husband and wife team. The Eades couple, who were both doctors, strongly believed that in order to maintain weight and promote proper health, an individual should control his or her insulin level.

The Protein Power Diet claims that hormone insulin, when released by carbohydrates foods, causes health problems such as hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, fluid retention, and obesity. Similar to the Atkins Diet, the program was designed to be extremely low in carbohydrates and high in fat and protein.

Depending on the dieter’s physical activity level, the program apportions the amounts of protein required at each meal. The dieter is allowed to consume a modest amount of carbohydrates between 30 to 50 grams per day.

While on the Protein Power Diet, a person should closely count every food item he or she consumes. The dieters are required to follow meals at a specific time.

The diet allows liberal amounts of red meat, poultry, eggs, fish, tofu, and low-fat cheese. It offers three nutritional plans categorizing the dieter’s level of commitment – Purist, Dilettante, and Hedonist.
This program has several weak points.

First, the Protein Power Diet’s idea the body prefers to metabolize fats and proteins with greater efficiency than carbohydrates still has no scientific studies to support this claim.

Second, there is strong evidence that a high-protein approach could increase cholesterol levels; increase the risk of heat diseases, cancer, and osteoporosis. It could damage kidney functions and result to a medical condition called Ketosis.

Third, the computation of consumed calories every meal could become a full time task. This could spoil the dieter’s momentum and slip back to his or her bad eating habits.

Lastly, because of the lack of nutrients, you will definitely lose weight. However, this reduced weight is not healthy and is will probably be gained instantly as soon as you go back to Carb consumption.

The Protein Power diet is suitable to meat lovers. However, one should take note that every food substance taken in excessive amounts could be dangerous to your health. Check with your physician if this diet is healthy for your condition.
