Valsartan

Drugs Starting with V

Drug Name: Valsartan

Brand Names: Diovan

Generic Name: Valsartan

Uses:  Valsartan is used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure), and it can also be used to treat heart failure for patients who cannot take angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors. Valsartan blocks the action of certain chemicals in the body that constrict blood vessels, thereby allowing smoother blood passage.

How to use: Valsartan is a tablet that is taken by mouth. For high blood pressure, it is usually taken once a day, while it is taken twice a day for the treatment of heart failure. It is important to take Valsartan only as directed, and taking more of what is necessary may be dangerous. If there is any part of your doctor’s directions that you do not understand, do not hesitate to ask questions. Even if you feel better, you must not stop taking Valsartan unless you are instructed by your doctor to do so.

Side Effects: Valsartan may cause some side effects which include dizziness, headaches, fatigue, diarrhea, stomach pains, back pains and joint pains. If these side effects become severe, contact your doctor immediately.

There are some rare but serious side effects that can occur. These include fainting, change in the amount of urine, signs of infection, yellowing of the eyes or skin, and allergic reactions. If these happen, stop taking the medication and consult your doctor immediately.

Precautions: Be sure to tell your doctor about any drugs or supplements that you are taking. Tell your doctor if you are allergic to Valsartan or some other medication. Also, tell your doctor if you have any history of kidney or liver diseases.

Drug Interaction: Valsartan may be affected when taking angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors. Your doctor may need to reduce or change your prescription dosage as required.

Overdose: Symptoms of Valsartan overdose include fainting and extreme dizziness. In case of Valsartan overdose, seek emergency medical treatment.

Notes: Strenuous activities should be done carefully when taking Valsartan, since you may experience dizziness and fatigue while doing so. If it can be helped, avoid these activities. Great care should also be exercised while driving. Be careful about rising up quickly from a standing or lying position.

Also, it is advisable to minimize alcohol intake or stop drinking completely while you are taking Valsartan since drinking may further lower your blood pressure and cause problems.

Missed Dose: Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it, but if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the previous dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose since this can be dangerous.

Important Note: This drug should not be used during pregnancy, especially within last six months. Doing so can cause serious harm or death to the fetus. If you become pregnant while taking Valsartan, contact your doctor immediately.

Storage: Valsartan must be tightly sealed and kept at room temperature. Do not store it at places with excessive heat or places with excessive moisture (such as the bathroom). Keep it out of the reach of children.
