Drug Name: Valium
Brand Names: Valium
Generic Name: Diazepam
Uses: Valium (Diazepam) is used to treat anxiety, acute alcohol withdrawals and seizures. It is also used to treat muscle spasms, as well as providing sedation before medical procedures. Diazepam is a benzodiazepine, which acts on the brain and nerves by affecting chemicals that induce tension and relaxation. It may also be used to treat panic attacks.
Valium (Diazepam) is known to act fast and effectively. In fact, some people use Diazepam to relax the muscles for activities that need steady hands, such as target shooting.
How to use: Valium (Diazepam) comes in tablets, long-release capsules and concentrated liquid forms. It is usually taken one to four times a day, depending on your therapy. Follow your doctor’s directions carefully when using it, and be sure to ask questions if you do not fully understand the directions.
Side Effects: Valium (Diazepam) may cause some side effects which include dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, headaches, fatigue, constipation and blurred vision. If these side effects become severe, contact your doctor immediately.
There are some rare but serious side effects that can occur. These include fainting, seizures, severe skin rashes, yellowing of the eyes or skin, and irregular heartbeats. If these happen, consult your doctor immediately.
Precautions: Be sure to tell your doctor about any drugs or supplements that you are taking. Tell your doctor if you are allergic to Diazepam or some other medication. Also, tell your doctor if you have any history of glaucoma, seizures, lung, heart, kidney or liver diseases.
If you use antacids, take Valium (Diazepam) at least one hour before taking the antacid.
Drug Interaction: The effect of Valium (Diazepam) can be affected by other drugs that have the potential to cause drowsiness. Also, the effects of Diazepam can be affected by drinking and smoking. Be sure to tell your doctor if you drink alcohol or smoke tobacco.
Overdose: Symptoms of a Valium (Diazepam) overdose include a very slow heart beat, unconsciousness, confusion, difficulty breathing, difficulty walking or talking, as well as an appearance of being drunk. If a Diazepam overdose occurs, seek medical treatment immediately.
Notes: Strenuous activities should be done carefully when taking Diazepam, since you may experience dizziness and fatigue while doing so. If it can be helped, avoid these activities. Great care should also be exercised while driving. Be careful about rising up quickly from a standing or lying position.
Missed Dose: If you have missed a dose, skip the dose completely and continue the regular dosing schedule. Never take a double dose to make up for the missed dose.
Important Note: If used improperly, Diazepam becomes very addictive and habit-forming. Remember to follow your doctor’s directions carefully and religiously. Taking too much or too little of Diazepam can cause some unwanted side effects. Also, if you experience drug tolerance towards Diazepam, consult your doctor immediately. Do not stop taking the drug even if you feel that you do not need it anymore, since sudden stopping may worsen your condition.
Storage: Valium (Diazepam) must be tightly sealed and kept at room temperature. Do not store it at places with excessive heat or places with excessive moisture (such as the bathroom). Keep it out of the reach of children.
