Uses: Spironolactone is a synthetic 17-lactone steroid which is a renal competitive aldosterone antagonist in a class of pharmaceuticals called potassium-sparing diuretics, used primarily to treat low-renin hypertension, hypokalemia, and Conn's syndrome.
How to use: Spironolactone comes in a tablet and is usually taken once or twice a day, depending on dosage. It should be taken with a meal or milk to increase absorption.
Side effects: It can cause gynecomastia, menstrual irregularities and testicular atrophy. Other side effects include ataxia, impotence, drowsiness and rashes.
Precautions: Before taking spironolactone, tell your doctor if you have allergies on the drug components or to sulfa drugs. Over the counter products like vitamins, herbals ,dietary supplements must also be noted and your doctor must know about this. You also have to be careful and check if you are having difficulty in urinating while taking spironolactone.Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, while taking this drug. Overdose: Symptoms of a spironolactone overdose may include drowsiness, confusion, red skin rash, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.
