Ranitidine

Drugs Starting with R

Drug Name: Ranitidine

Brand Names: Zantac, Tritec

Generic Name: Ranitidine

Uses: Ranitidine functions by blocking the action of histamine on stomach cells and reduces stomach acid production. Ranitidine is used in the treatment of stomach acid problems. It is usually used for the treatment of ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) where backward-flowing stomach acids causes heartburn and injury of the esophagus, and instances where the stomach produces too much acid.

How to use: Ranitidine is available in tablet form, effervescent tablet form, effervescent granule form and syrups, all of which are to be taken by mouth. All forms are usually taken once or twice per day. It can prevent symptoms if it is taken about 30 to 60 minutes before eating foods that cause heartburn.

Ranitidine tablets and syrup should be taken with a full glass of water. Ranitidine syrup should be measured with a dose-measuring spoon or cup instead of using a regular spoon to ensure correct dosage. Ranitidine effervescent tablets and granules should be dissolved in a full glass of water before drinking.

Side Effects: Side effects of Ranitidine include headache, constipation, diarrhea, upset stomach, vomiting and stomach pains. If these side effects become severe or bothersome, consult your doctor.

Some severe side effects of Ranitidine include allergic reactions, unusual bleeding or bruising, bleeding gums, irregular heartbeats or yellowing of the skin or eyes. If you experience these severe side effects, you should stop taking Ranitidine and consult your doctor immediately.

Precautions: If you have a history of kidney or liver diseases, tell your doctor right away since this can affect your proper dosage requirements or limits. Also, inform your doctor if you have plans of getting pregnant or nursing while taking Ranitidine. It is best to consult your doctor if you become pregnant while taking Ranitidine.

Drug Interaction: Antacids should not be taken within one hour of taking Ranitidine, since antacids may decrease its effectiveness. Ranitidine should not be taken if triazolam or anticoagulants (blood thinners). Also, since Ranitidine affects the potency of your stomach acids, it may cause unwanted effects when used with some drugs. For more comprehensive information, talk to your doctor about any other medication you are taking Ranitidine.

Overdose: Symptoms of Ranitidine overdose include nausea, vomiting, increased saliva production, difficulty in breathing and a fast heartbeat. If this happens, seek medical treatment immediately.

Ranitidine Notes: Ranitidine can have an effect on the metabolism of alcohol. It may be advisable to stop drinking until the treatment involving Ranitidine has been accomplished. Also, do not stop taking Ranitidine unless your doctor says so or until the treatment period is finished, since the treatment of ulcers can take a long time.

Ranitidine Missed Dose: Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it, but if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the previous dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose since this can be dangerous.

Important Note: The safety of Ranitidine for kids has not yet been established, so a consultation with the doctor about the possible effects of Ranitidine on the child may be necessary.

Storage: Ranitidine must be tightly sealed and kept at room temperature. Do not store it at places with excessive heat or places with excessive moisture (such as the bathroom). Keep it out of the reach of children.
