Drug Name: Protonix
Brand Name: Protonix (Pro-ton-iks)
Generic Name: Pantoprazole Sodium
Uses: Protonix is a "proton pump inhibitor" that reduces the amount of acid the stomach produces. It helps to control nighttime heartburn and other symptoms associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD -- a condition in which sores develop in the lining of the esophagus carried by too much acid from the stomach. Protonix also treats other conditions involving excessive stomach acid production such as in Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Protonix works by blocking the production of acid in the stomach.
How to use: Protonix comes as a long-acting tablet to be taken by mouth usually once or twice a day. It may be taken with or without food. Swallow the tablets whole. Do not split, chew, or crush them. They are specially formulated to release the medication slowly in the body.
Side Effects: The common side effects of Protonix include diarrhea, headache, abdominal pain, burping, gas, nausea and vomiting. Rarely, insomnia and rash may be present. Tell your doctor if you experienced any of these symptoms. Protonix may cause extremely rare -- but very serious -- side effects such as severe allergic reaction, severe swelling of the face and throat, eye damage, dangerous skin reactions and inflammation of the pancreas. Seek medical help if you experienced difficulty in breathing or swallowing, and when you see blisters and eruptions of the skin.
Precautions: There has been no definite proof if Protonix is safe for pregnant women. Please consult your doctor if you are pregnant while using Protonix or if you are into breastfeeding to avoid harmful effects.
Drug Interaction: If Protonix is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased or altered. Inform your doctor if you are taking Ampicillin, vitamins containing iron or Ketoconazole.
Overdose: There are minimal reports about Protonix overdose in humans. Although, it has been known that it interferes coordination and reduces activity in animals. Medical attention is needed if overdose is suspected.
Notes: Continue your normal diet unless the doctor tells you otherwise. If you are taking antacids, you may continue to do so.
Missed Dose: Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. But if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular schedule. Never take two doses at once.
Important Note: Before having any laboratory test, tell your doctor and the laboratory personnel that you are taking Protonix. If you have a liver condition, make sure the doctor is aware of it. A dosage adjustment may be needed for anyone with serious liver disease.
Storage: Keep Protonix in tightly-closed container and store at room temperature away from excess heat and moisture.
