Uses: Phenobarbital is used to control seizures. It is also used as a sedative to relieve anxiety. In some cases, it is used as a short-term treatment for insomnia.
How to use: Phenobarbital comes as a tablet, capsule or in liquid form. It is usually taken one to three times a day. If taken only once per day, take it before bedtime. If you are using the liquid form, it is best to use specially marked spoons for more accurate doses. If there is any part of your doctor’s directions that you do not understand, do not hesitate to ask questions. Even if you feel better, you must not stop taking Phenobarbital unless you are instructed by your doctor to do so.
Side Effects: Phenobarbital may cause some side effects which include dizziness, drowsiness, headaches, nightmares and confusion. If these side effects become severe, contact your doctor immediately.
There are some rare but serious side effects that can occur. These include fevers, mouth sores, easy bruising and bleeding, fevers, and allergic reactions. If these happen, stop taking the medication and consult your doctor immediately.
Precautions: Be sure to tell your doctor about any drugs or supplements that you are taking. Tell your doctor if you are allergic to Phenobarbital or some other medication. Also, tell your doctor if you have any history of anemia, seizures, or any lung, heart or liver diseases.
Drug Interaction: Phenobarbital may be affected when taking blood thinners, birth control pills, sleeping aids, and steroid medicines. Your doctor may need to reduce or change your prescription dosage as required.
Overdose: Symptoms of Phenobarbital overdose include difficulty breathing, fast heartbeat, low body temperature and heavy sedation.. In case of Phenobarbital overdose, seek emergency medical treatment.
Notes: Strenuous activities should be done carefully when taking Phenobarbital, since you may experience dizziness and fatigue while doing so. If it can be helped, avoid these activities. Great care should also be exercised while driving. Be careful about rising up quickly from a standing or lying position.
Also, it is advisable to minimize alcohol intake or stop drinking completely while you are taking Phenobarbital, as it may increase the symptoms of dizziness and dangerous sedation may be a result.
Missed Dose: Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it and take that day’s remaining doses in evenly spaced intervals. Continue your regular dosing schedule for the next day. Do not take a double dose since this can be dangerous.
Important Note: Do not immediately stop taking this drug without the consent of your doctor, since doing so may cause more harm than good. Also, regular large doses may cause serious damage to your liver, especially when taking it with acetaminophen. Follow your dosage instructions very carefully.
This drug should not be used during pregnancy, because this drug is known to cause serious harm or death to the fetus. However, do not immediately stop taking Phenobarbital without your doctor’s permission since this could also cause seizures. If you become pregnant while taking Phenobarbital, contact your doctor immediately.
If used improperly, Phenobarbital becomes very addictive and habit-forming. Remember to follow your doctor’s directions carefully and religiously.
Storage: Phenobarbital must be tightly sealed and kept at room temperature. Do not store it at places with excessive heat or places with excessive moisture (such as the bathroom). Keep it out of the reach of children.
