Uses: Nabumetone is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug which is used to relieve pain, tenderness and inflammation. It is also used to relieve the stiffness caused by certain types of arthritis. It works by stopping the body from producing chemicals that trigger the feeling of pain.
How to use: Nabumetone is a tablet that is taken by mouth. It is usually taken once or twice per day, with or without food. It is important to take Nabumetone only as directed, and taking more of what is necessary may be dangerous. If there is any part of your doctor’s directions that you do not understand, do not hesitate to ask questions. Even if you feel better, you must not stop taking Nabumetone unless you are instructed by your doctor to do so.
Side Effects: Nabumetone may cause some side effects which include dizziness, nausea, depression, fatigue, ringing in the ears, mouth sores and insomnia. If these side effects become severe, contact your doctor immediately.
There are some rare but serious side effects that can occur. These include chest pains, shortness or breath, black, tarry or clay colored stools, confusion, seizures, peeling skin rashes, dark urine and allergic reactions. If these happen, stop taking the medication and consult your doctor immediately.
Precautions: Be sure to tell your doctor about any drugs or supplements that you are taking. Tell your doctor if you are allergic to Nabumetone, aspirins or some other medication. Also, tell your doctor if you have any history of liver, heart, kidney or liver diseases, high-blood pressure, asthma, stomach ulcer or bleeding disorder.
Drug Interaction: Nabumetone may be affected when taking aspirin, other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, other cough, cold allergies or pain medicine, blood thinners, steroids, diuretics, ACE inhibitors and lithium supplements. Your doctor may need to reduce or change your prescription dosage as required.
Overdose: Symptoms of Nabumetone overdose include nausea, vomiting, stomach pains, seizures and slow breathing. In case of Nabumetone overdose, seek emergency medical treatment.
Notes: Strenuous activities should be done carefully when taking Nabumetone, since you may experience dizziness and fatigue while doing so. If it can be helped, avoid these activities. Great care should also be exercised while driving. Be careful about rising up quickly from a standing or lying position.
Also, it is advisable to minimize alcohol intake or stop drinking completely while you are taking Nabumetone since drinking may increase the risk for gastrointestinal bleeding.
Avoid exposure to too much sunlight when taking Nabumetone.
Missed Dose: Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it, but if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the previous dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose since this can be dangerous.
Important Note: This drug is tagged by the Food and Drugs Administration as a medicine that may increase the risk of cardiovascular events such as strokes and gastrointestinal bleeding. Also, Nabumetone should not be taken with other lithium supplements since it may cause a rise of lithium occurrence in the body, leading to lithium poisoning.
Storage: Nabumetone must be tightly sealed and kept at room temperature. Do not store it at places with excessive heat or places with excessive moisture (such as the bathroom). Keep it out of the reach of children.
