Generic Name: labetalol hydrochloride
Uses: Labetalol is used for the treatment of blood pressure. This belongs to the drug class beta-blockers. It works by relaxing your blood vessels and reducing the heart’s work and help the heart to beat more regularly. Labetalol does not work to cure high blood pressure but only aims to control it. This medication may also be used for the treatment of chest pain or angina and treat those that have tetanus.
How to use: Labetalol is available in tablet forms. Take this with a full glass of water and at doses should be at regular intervals. It is usually taken 2 to 3 times a day. Take the medication as the doctor prescribed it and do not take more or take it longer than directed. You should continue using it even if you think you already feel well. Stop using the medication only if directed by your doctor.
Side Effects: Less serious side effects of labetalol are dizziness, tingling of the scalp or skin, lightheadedness, excessive tiredness, headache, upset stomach and stuffy nose. Consult your doctor only if these symptoms do not go away. More serious side effects include shortness of breath or wheezing, swelling of the feet and lower legs, sudden weight gain and chest pain. If you experience any of these symptoms, get immediate medical attention.
Precautions: Inform your doctor if you are allergic to labetalol or any other drugs. Also if you are experiencing or had ever experienced having heart, kidney or liver disease, asthma or lung disease, severe allergies, diabetes or pheochromocytoma. If you are pregnant, are breastfeeding or become pregnant at the time of treatment, also notify your doctor about these conditions.
Drug Interaction: Some drugs may interact with labetalol. Some of these drugs are cimetidine, diltiazem, hawthorn, nitroglycerin, verapamil, water pills or diuretics and medicines for diabetes, high blood pressure, mental depression and colds. You should notify your doctor if you are taking any of these medications. You should also tell your doctor if you are taking any nutritional supplements or herbal products.
Overdose: In case of an overdose, contact your local emergency services or local poison control center.
Notes: Avoid activities that require mental alertness until you know how labetalol affects you. Taking this medicine may cause you to become drowsy. Also avoid the alcohol use as this may increase the drowsiness that is already caused by the drug.
Missed Dose: Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. But just skip it, if it is nearly time for the next one and just continue with your regular schedule. Never double up your dosage.
Important Note: You should not stop taking labetalol unless directed by your doctor. If labetalol is abruptly stopped, it may cause angina or heart attack.
Storage: Labetalol should be placed inside a tightly closed container, preferably in the one it came with. Keep out of reach of children and store at room temperature, away from excess moisture and heat.
