Generic Name: Hyoscyamine

Uses: Hyoscyamine drug is used as a treatment to a variety of gastro-intestinal tract disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome, diarrhea and some forms of hyperacidity. It may also be used to control bed-wetting, frequent urination and motion sickness.

How to use:
Hyoscyamine comes in tablet, extended-release capsules, liquids to be taken orally, and injectable forms. It is important to take Hyoscyamine only as directed, and taking more of what is necessary may be dangerous. If there is any part of your doctor’s directions that you do not understand, do not hesitate to ask questions. Even if you feel better, you must not stop taking Hyoscyamine unless you are instructed by your doctor to do so.

Swallow the extended-release tablets whole. Do not chew or crush them. Swallow them with a full glass of water. Also, take note that Hyoscyamine injections may only be administered by qualified health care professionals.

Side Effects: Hyoscyamine may cause some side effects which include dizziness, headaches, fatigue, nausea, difficulty in urinating, decreased sweating, and changes in taste. If these side effects become severe, contact your doctor immediately.

There are some rare but serious side effects that can occur. These rashes, eye pain, irregular or fast heart rates, and allergic reactions.

Precautions: Inform your doctor if you have any history of kidney or liver diseases, any history of high blood pressure or heart problems, asthma, chronic lung diseases, and allergies.Tell your doctor if you are allergic to Hyoscyamine or to any other drug.

Drug Interaction: Hyoscyamine may be affected when taking over-the-counter cough, cold and allergy medicines, decongestants and tricyclic antidepressants. Your doctor may need to reduce or change your prescription dosage as required.

Overdose: Symptoms of Hyoscyamine overdose include vomiting, weak pulse, seizures, and an irregular heartbeat. In case of Hyoscyamine overdose, seek emergency medical treatment.

Notes: Strenuous activities should be done carefully when taking Hyoscyamine, since you may experience dizziness and fatigue while doing so. If it can be helped, avoid these activities. Great care should also be exercised while driving. Be careful about rising up quickly from a standing or lying position.

Also, it is advisable to minimize alcohol intake or stop drinking completely while you are taking Hyoscyamine, as it may increase the symptoms of dizziness and drowsiness.

Missed Dose: Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it, but if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the previous dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose since this can be dangerous.

Important Note: Avoid hot places when taking Hyoscyamine, since decreased sweating may cause your body to overheat and suffer a heat stroke.

Storage: Hyoscyamine must be tightly sealed and kept at room temperature. Do not store it at places with excessive heat or places with excessive moisture (such as the bathroom). Keep it out of the reach of children.
