Generic Name: Fluticasone Propionate

Uses: Flonase is an anti-inflammatory nasal spray used to relieve nasal allergy symptoms. It is also sometimes used to treat sleep apnea. Flonase works by preventing the release of substances in the body that cause inflammation.

How to use: The recommended starting dosage of Flonase is two sprays in each nostril once a day. One spray in each nostril twice a day could also be taken. For maintenance therapy, one spray in each nostril once a day is recommended. Total daily dosage should not exceed two sprays in each nostril.

Side Effects: Headache or lightheadedness, sneezing after application, nosebleed, sore throat, tearing of the eyes and unpleasant (or loss of) taste or smell are some of the common side effects of Flonase. If these side effects continue or may bother you, check with your doctor. Rarely, immediate hypersensitivity reactions or contact dermatitis may occur after the administration of Flonase. Other side effects include wheezing, nasal septum perforation, cataract, glaucoma, increased intra-ocular pressure, irritation of the nasal mucous membranes, cough, asthma symptoms, nausea and vomiting, nasal burning and irritation, pharyngitis, blood in nasal mucus, runny nose, abdominal pain, diarrhea, fever, flu-like symptoms, aches and pains, dizziness and bronchitis. Stop using Flonase and seek immediate medical attention if you experience allergic reactions such as difficulty breathing and closing of your throat; swelling of your lips, tongue or face.

Precautions: Flonase is contraindicated in patients who are sensitive to any of its ingredients. There are no sufficient findings for pregnant women, so, flonase should be used only if it wouldn’t put the fetus to risk. Before using Flonase, inform your doctor if you have a viral, bacterial or fungal infection of any kind since absorption of Flonase into the system can inhibit the body's ability to fight off infections.  Avoid using flonase during breastfeeding to prevent harm to the baby.

Drug Interaction: Some medicines may interact with Flonase such as Ketoconazole and Ritonavir. The use of other oral or inhaled steroids may increase the chance of side effects or overdose.
Overdose: An overdose of this medication is not likely to occur. But if an overdose is suspected, seek immediate medical attention.
Notes: Avoid items or activities that could make your symptoms worse. Clean areas from dust or pet fur and avoid exposing yourself to known sources of infection.

Missed Dose: Use the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and use the next one as directed. Avoid double dosing.
Important Note: Stay away from people with chicken pox, measles or any other type of infection since your immune system may not be strong enough to fight off an infection while you are using Flonase.

Storage: Keep Flonase in a tightly closed container and store at room temperature between 4° and 30°C (39° and 86°F) away from heat and light.
