Uses: Captopril belongs in a class of drugs known as angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors. Captopril blocks the action of certain chemicals in the body that constrict blood vessels, thereby allowing smoother blood passage. It is also used for the quick recovery of patients of who have suffered from heart attacks and strokes.
How to use: Captopril is a tablet that is taken by mouth. It is usually taken once or twice per day on an empty stomach. It is important to take Captopril only as directed to avoid toxicity and health complications.
Side Effects: Captopril may cause some side effects which include taste disturbances, dizziness, coughs, rashes and weakness. If these side effects become severe, contact your doctor immediately.
There are some rare but serious side effects that can occur. These include fainting, signs of infection, difficulty in breathing, little or no urine, and allergic reactions. If these happen, stop taking the medication and consult your doctor immediately.
Precautions: Be sure to tell your doctor about any drugs or supplements that you are taking. Tell your doctor if you are allergic to Captopril or some other medication. Also, tell your doctor if you have any history of kidney or liver diseases, diabetes, scleroderma or lupus, and high levels of potassium in the blood.
Drug Interaction: Captopril should not be taken with potassium supplements and salt substitutes that contain potassium. Also, Captopril may be affected when taking angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors.
Overdose: Symptoms of Captopril overdose include fainting and extreme dizziness. In case of Captopril overdose, seek emergency medical treatment.
Notes: Strenuous activities should be done carefully when taking Captopril, since you may experience dizziness and fatigue while doing so. If it can be helped, avoid these activities. Great care should also be exercised while driving. Be careful about rising up quickly from a standing or lying position.
Also, it is advisable to minimize alcohol intake or stop drinking completely while you are taking Captopril since drinking may further lower your blood pressure and cause problems.
Captopril treatment is known to dehydrate the patient during therapy, so taking more fluids will help to solve dehydration and its effects.
Missed Dose: Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it, but if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the previous dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose since this can be dangerous.
Important Note: This drug should not be used during pregnancy, especially within last six months. Doing so can cause serious harm or death to the fetus. If you become pregnant while taking Captopril, contact your doctor immediately.
Storage: Captopril must be tightly sealed and kept at room temperature. Keep it out of reach of children.
